SIPAM

An international program for the development of globally important ingenious agricultural heritage systems

Many agricultural systems and their associated landscapes have been created, maintained and passed on by generations of the rural world. Based on diverse species and their interactions, and using locally adapted combinations of management practices, they are an important contribution to the agricultural biodiversity and the natural and cultural heritage of the world.

Nevertheless, the economic and cultural globalization, the intervention of foreign technologies and the introduction of inappropriate policies threaten the existence of these agricultural systems as a viable way of subsistence in the rural world, and consequently may lead to the loss of their associated knowledge and culture.

This project aims to establish the basis for international recognition, dynamic conservation and sustainable management of Globally Important Ingenious Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). In addition this project intends to guide the development of national policies, legal frameworks and economic incentives towards the conservation of heritage sites. At a local level the project will work in collaboration with local communities seeking strategies for the sustainable management of their natural resources and the conservation of traditional knowledge.

GIAHS Project is been executed by FAO in partnership with other international organizations. Until today, seven sites have been selected as candidate systems for the development of specific action programmes, and Chiloé Island is one of them.
